Groups & Committees
Time and talent are two of the treasures we covenant to contribute to our congregation. Our groups and committees put our covenant and these values into practice. See where your skills and interests would find a meaningful pace.

Standing Committees
Our members keep the campus beautiful. Maintaining our congregation’s home is very much like keeping up your own abode, but with a group of colleagues!
This committee provides support and information in order to promote events and initiatives at UUSV. Communications is ultimately responsible for The Current, our weekly newsletter, the Order of Service, the bulletin board, and the website.
Our Congregational Care team members are the warm, embracing souls among us who reach out to members who are ill, hospitalized, in nursing care, or simply need a friendly voice to ensure they are well, and help if they are not. There’s no specific time commitment; they operate on call, as needed. And what a welcoming presence they are for those in need of care or simply a reminder that they are loved and missed!

The Finance Committee is responsible for reviewing the monthly financial statements prepared by our outside accounting firm. This Committee also provides support to the Treasurer during the budget process and other times, as requested.
The Personnel committee functions as the Human Relations department for our Minister and staff. They are responsible for filling staff vacancies, overseeing our employee benefits plan, and managing the process for annual performance reviews.
Maintaining a safe and healthy environment for our members, friends, and children takes three mindsets: awareness of real and potential problems (a broken lock, torn carpet that could cause a stumble, incomplete gutter drainage, a leaky pipe); planning for sudden calamities (an armed intruder, fire in the chancel, a hurt child); and a broad-based vision of how to ensure that our UU home is as secure, safe, and protective as we can make it.
Our Social Action Committee works to advocate, organize, and act for justice to live out the values of our faith and our Eight Principles. Join us! Check out our dedicated social action page here: https://uusv.org/social-action/
This committee encourages members to participate in supporting UUSV’s annual budget, which includes staffing, building maintenance, social and educational programs, and community action initiatives. While Stewardship’s biggest role is the management of our annual pledge drive, it also works to promote other fundraising opportunities.
Our SSA team recruits and supports guest speakers for our pulpit on the Sundays when Rev. Michael is not there. We use our knowledge of the community to reach out to other clergy, activists, writers, and leaders of organizations whose mission is compatible with our covenant or who have a message valuable to our congregation.
The friendly folks who greet you at the door with an Order of Service each Sunday are just one part of this committee, the Greeters. In addition, the committee comprises a small, dedicated group who reach out to visitors, potential members, and the community at large to turn strangers into friends and friends into fellow congregants. If you like sharing the good news that there is a faith commUUnity right here in Black Mountain for thoughtful, caring, conscientious families, couples, and individuals, you’ll like being part of this team!
