Religious Education at UUSV

Nurturing across all ages graphic

During Sunday Service, our Religious Education (RE) program provides a welcoming space where young people explore life's big questions through age-appropriate activities, stories, and discussions. Children and teens discover UU principles while developing their own spiritual identities and building friendships. We welcome families of all backgrounds and beliefs.

Director of Religious Education

Susan Enwright Hicks (she/they) first experienced UU as a teen in Florida when she began attending YRUU “cons” with her best friend. She has also been involved at a high level with UU camps SWIM and SUUSI. In her early twenties, Susan moved to WNC and not long thereafter she became the RE Assistant at the UU Congregation of Asheville and earned a Political Science degree from UNCA.

Susan and her husband welcomed their first child, and she later joined UUSV in July 2019 when her second child was two. After the COVID shutdown, RE largely operated in a one-room-schoolhouse capacity. In May of 2025 she graduated with a Masters of Public Affairs from Western Carolina University. In the fall of 2025 she became trained in facilitating Our Whole Lives for 7-12th grades.

Our Teachers

RE classes are largely led by the DRE (three Sundays a month) with supportive volunteers assisting in our Nursery/Pre-K room as needed and stepping in during the Sundays Susan is away. These volunteers are valued members of our community: foster parents, mental health professionals, retired healthcare workers, teachers, and more. All are committed to supporting young people in their spiritual development.

The Rainbow Connection

In this area we read stories and adapt lessons from The Rainbow Connection as appropriate given the children present on any given Sunday. This curriculum uses popular story books for preschoolers to discuss those values inherent in Unitarian Universalism. And, because socialization and comfort are important goals for this age, each class may contain a fun craft project, time for songs, and games, snacks, and time for free play with friends.

The Magic of UU

The Magic of UU marries the fun wizarding curriculum that focuses on social justice and social action. While enjoying wizarding activities, children also work on real-world social action projects, chosen to be both relevant and meaningful to them. They will be able to participate in the magic of making the world a better place. The curriculum spends two to three classes on each social justice issue, with the goal of producing tangible results on real-world problems. Social justice issues included in the curriculum are illiteracy, hunger, poverty, hatred, fair trade and child labor, child sickness, animal cruelty, and the environment.
